The science of therapeutic sound
Sound healing operates on principles of physics and neuroscience, using specific frequencies and vibrations to influence the body and mind. It promotes relaxation by calming the nervous system, reducing stress hormones like cortisol, and shifting brainwaves from active beta states to relaxed alpha, theta, or delta states. Key mechanisms include entrainment (synchronizing to sound) and resonance (stimulating cellular vibration).
- Brainwave Entrainment: Sound instruments (singing bowls, gongs) induce brainwave shifts. Low-frequency sounds, particularly, can reduce anxiety and guide the brain into, for example, theta waves, which are associated with deep meditation and emotional processing.
- Vibrational Resonance & The Body: Every part of the body has a natural frequency. External sounds help the body resonate, potentially lowering stress and promoting healing.
- Nervous System Regulation: Sound waves can stimulate the vagus nerve, which helps shift the body from a "fight-or-flight" state to a "rest-and-restore" (parasympathetic) state.
